Is the Veneration of Images Justified?
Some people reprove us for honoring images of the Savior, of the Mother of God and other holy servants of Christ. But let them think for a moment. In the beginning God created humanity in his own image. Why ever should we have such respect for one another, if not because we are made in the image of God? In Basil’s words, ‘the honor paid to the image is in reality paid to its prototype,’ that is to say, to what the image represents. Thus the Jewish people revered the Tabernacle because that, much more than the rest of creation, was an image of God.
The making and the veneration of images are not a novelty. They are based on a very ancient tradition. God made the first human being as an image of himself. Abraham, Moses, Isaiah and all the prophets saw God, not in his true being, but in his image. The burning bush was an image of the Mother of God. When Moses wanted to approach, God said to him: ‘Put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.’ [Exod. 3:5] If the ground on which Moses saw the image of the Mother of God was holy, how much more holy will the image itself be!

YEAR OF FAITH Christ is risen…and…He granted life! Christ has redeemed us from the clutches of sin and Hades, and has made it possible for mankind to share in the unending life of the Holy Trinity our God. “He surrendered Himself as a ransom to Death by which we were held captive, …Descending by the cross into Hades… He freed us from Death’s despair, and rose on the third day, preparing the way for the resurrection of all flesh from the dead.” (Anaphora of St. Basil). Christ died for our sins, but rose so that we might share in the life of God. We participate in the resurrection and in the divine life by receiving the Holy Spirit who is Creator and Giver of Life. The gift of divine life is given to us within the life of the Church, especially by means of the holy sacramental Mysteries (i.e., Sacraments). Fr. Anthony Hernandez, Eparchy of Phoenix, Office of Religious Education.

Cheesefare Week is considered a part of the Great Fast, a preparation period in which we enter gradually into the asceticism of the Fast. It originated, however, in the Eastern Orthodox (non-Chalcedonian) Churches and was separate from the Great Fast. It was called the Feast of Nineveh, and was observed three weeks before the Great Fast, in what is now the Week of the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee. The Byzantine Church(that’s us) would not observe it at the time as those Churches in which it was not in communion and moved it to the Week before the Great Fast (that’s this week).

YEAR OF FAITH “BY DEATH HE TRAMPLED DEATH”
In the preparation rite (Prothesis or Proskomedia) of the Divine Liturgy the priest says: “You have redeemed us from the curse of the law with Your precious blood; nailed to the cross and pierced with the lance, You have become a fountain of immortality for us; glory to You, our Savior.”
These words remind us that Christ is our redeemer who has ransomed us from the captivity of sin and hell. “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. / Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows / like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth.” Prophecy of Isaiah 53. “…He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” Is. 53:12. By His humility, Christ has overcome the pride of Satan and the sins of man.
